Outdoor Education
Opportunities are available for students of all abilities to pursue outdoor education interests. At Hauraki School children enjoy such challenges and they encourage each other to do their best. They thrive on team spirit and gain a sense of responsibility and self-esteem as well as having fun. Achievements are recognised and celebrated.
Representative sports teams that feature include cricket, hockey, basketball, netball, soccer, and rugby with new opportunities being considered all the time. In addition, swimming, cross country and athletic sports days are held annually for all children with the opportunity to compete in inter-school competitions as well.
A Waterwise programme takes place during the summer at nearby Narrow Neck beach and helps all Year 6 students gain confidence on the water. It teaches them to sail optimist yachts, and paddle kayaks as well as covering many aspects of water safety. This is carried out by trained instructors and teachers but is dependent on parent support.
Educational visits by outside agencies or to specific venues that support teaching and learning programmes feature regularly. The use of local resources is encouraged as much as possible to enable students to better understand the community they live in.
A school camp is held at the beginning of each year for Year 6 students which also provides opportunities for challenge outside the classroom and helps to develop healthy, wholesome individuals.
We are fortunate at Hauraki to have a number of talented parents as well as staff who are willing to provide their services with outdoor education pursuits.
